December 2, 1989 .. 25 years without dynasty .. .. While India rightly celebrates 125th birth anniversary of its first PM, Nehru, who also started the famous Nehru-Gandhi dynasty, one more very important date is approaching at the same time. India would be completing 25 glorious years on December 2, 2014, without having anybody from the dynasty as PM. A total of eight PMs, some distinguished and some not so, have consecutively graced the high position, without being a member of this dynasty. Earlier to that, the dynasty had occupied the position of Prime Ministership for 38 long years out of a total 44 years since Independence. .. Dynasties in SE Asian democracies have rather been rule than aberration. In India too, almost each and every state and each political party has become personal fiefdom of dynasties. Dynasties undoubtedly breed corruption and inefficiency of various types and it would require a serious attempt to correct this culture. Let us celebrate the 125 birth anniversary of our great first PM ... but let us also use the 25th year of dynasty free India to think of ways to permanently get rid of this perennial decease that started in India, with Nehru. Even a constitutional amendment may be thought of.
