December 25 Deciding to Worship Him Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him. - Matthew 2: 1-2 Today, we return to the wise men. Earlier, while focusing on the words: We have seen His star in the East..., we noted their ability to look for, see and follow Gods signs. Here, we watch them direct their sights towards Gods Son. More specifically, we train our eyes on the part of the text which says: We have come to worship Him. You cant help but be impressed by the courage it must have taken for them to stand in the Kings palace before the Kings face and declare: We have come to worship Him. We know you are the King, but we did not come all this way for you. We came to worship Him. How can we miss the lessons these wise men give us on how to worship Jesus Christ, especially on His birthday? What they did could easily be called: Worship 101! They worshipped Him on purpose. The wise men did not make the trip just to see Jesus. They came with the specific purpose of worshipping Him. There is no doubt that the Sunday morning experience we have in our churches would be much greater and more powerful if everyone came with the specific purpose of worshipping Christ. They worshipped Him with presents. When these wise men came to worship they did not come empty handed. In fact, they brought gifts to Him as an act of worship. They understand that we worship with the fruit of our lips as well as the fruit of our labor. They worshipped Him in His presence. Since they had made the trip to worship Christ, we should not be surprised that this is exactly what they did. When they got into His presence, they did not petition Him. They did not question Him. They did not argue with Him. They did not doubt Him. They worshipped Him. At the end of the day, powerful worship takes place when we do it on purpose, do it with presents and do it in His presence.
