December 4, 2014 Dear Major Parker, Thank you for contacting me regarding the Nuclear Deterrence Operations Service Medal. I appreciate hearing from you and welcome the opportunity to respond. As you know, the Air Force announced the establishment of the Nuclear Deterrence Operations Service Medal (NDOSM) to recognize the dedicated service of the Airmen assigned to units in the Nuclear Enterprise following the end of the Cold War. To be eligible for the NDOSM an Airman must have been assigned to units providing nuclear deterrence for 120 consecutive days, or 179 nonconsecutive days. I understand that some have concerns that individuals who served in these units prior to December 27, 1991 are not eligible to receive the medal. You may be interested to know that on June 5, 2014, Representative Steve Israel of New York introduced H.R. 4807, the Cold War Service Medal Act of 2014, which would authorize the issuance of the Cold War Service Medal to members of the Armed Forces who served honorably in the stand against communism during the Cold War before 1991. This bill is currently pending before the House Committee on Armed Services. I will keep your support in mind should similar legislation come before the Senate in the days ahead. Ensuring our servicemembers and veterans receive the honor, recognition and support that they deserve has always been one of my very highest priorities in the Senate. Thank you for your service and for your commitment to veterans. Again, thank you for contacting me. Please do not hesitate to contact me in the future if I can be of further assistance to you on this or any other issue. Sincerely, Claire McCaskill United States Senator
