Taoism Confucianism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.? _________________________________________________________ Taoism (pronounced dao), China, 2,500 years old. Principles: love, moderation, humility, wu wei (non-action) or emptiness, spontaneity. Confucianism, China, 2,500 years old. Principles: moral social and political behavior, filial piety and loyalty, reason and moderation in all actions. Buddhism, India, 2,500 years old. Principles: to end the cycle of rebirth and suffering through enlightenment; requiring internal detachment from desire by following the eightfold path of right speech, action, livelihood, effort, awareness, concentration, thought, and understanding. Hinduism, India, 4,000 + years old. Principles: focus on responsibility for self improvement, ethics/duty (Dharma), continuing cycle of birth, life, death and rebirth(Samsāra ), understanding action and subsequent reaction(Karma), and liberation from the cycle of samsara(Moksha). Judaism, old Judea/middle east, 4,000 years old. Principles: monotheism, study and the observance of Gods laws and commandments as written in the Torah and Talmud, importance of family, community, tradition and piety. Christianity, old Judea/middle east, 2000 years old. Principles: Jesus embodied the Jewish tradition of a coming Messiah, through the metaphors of his life stories in the New Testament. Tought tolerance, openness, healing and a method of transcending this reality through an internal purification process - becoming a Son of God, achieving heaven, or abundant life/eternal aliveness. Islam, Arabia, 1,500 years old. Principles: monotheism, acceptance of Mohammed as prophet, study of the divinely inspired Koran, requirement of community charity and hag/return to Mecca, prayer 5 times a day, religious piety and purity.
