The Rutgers Democrats are always in support of free speech and political discourse at our university. However, we fully understand the sentiments of many students both in favor and against having Condoleezza Rice as our commencement speaker this year. Our organization supports Ms. Rice’s decision to rescind her role in our ceremony. The controversy around Ms. Rice would have taken away from the graduation ceremony this year, as a whole. The purpose of our graduation ceremony is to honor the students graduating, not politics. We believe that in the future it is important to get students involved in the selection of our commencement speaker. The process this year was clearly flawed and did not take into account the students who would be offended by having Ms. Rice as our speaker. We hope that in the future, we can have a more open process in which everyone’s opinions are heard.
