Decker: Nightfall The house was silent and still. Decker felt his heart go cold when he stepped out of his sleeping chamber and realized that his puppy was gone. He should have woke him up last night and asked him plainly to stay. It was night, as usual, but it seemed darker than normal. He sat in the lone chair without bothering to turn on the light. Dawn was twelve long hours away. He couldnt believe that at one time, he felt as if he never have enough time to do everything he wanted. Now he wished at times that he could sleep whole seasons away. Rally, he whispered to himself. Rally. So maybe its not to be with that puppy, but I could get another puppy. But that was so unlikely that he couldnt fool himself into believing it. Werewolves guarded their children fiercely. Theyd never let someone blithely take one away. Decker was over two hundred years old and hed never heard of a stray puppy before. Even the young Prince of Boston had been snatched up by the Wolf King to be kept safe in New York City. Joshua was a rare, rare prize. One that someone was desperate to capture. He really shouldnt be left running around the city alone. Decker stood and paced in the narrow cleared space in front the chair. Joshua could have left minutes after sunrise and Decker wouldnt know. All he could know was that the boy left sometime during the day, which meant he could literally be anywhere in the world. Humans travelled at insane speeds this century. Zip. Zap. Zoom. He could have taken a plane to the other side of the country. Other side of the world. But Joshua was broke. Surely an airplane ticket was more than a subway token. (Not that they used tokens any more, it was getting harder and harder to keep up with the newest ways to pay for things.) Joshua didnt have a dime to his name. Unless hed pinched Deckers wallet. Habits were what saved Deckers sanity over time. (He spent most of 1971 looking for his wallet. Hed found it in a paper bag with a pack of chewing gum on the laundry room shelf. He still wasnt sure why hed bought gum in the first place.) Since then, he unloaded his pockets the moment he walked in the door. His wallet was still on the foyer table. He leafed through the bills, trying to remember much cash he had the night before. There didnt seem to be any missing. Oh Joshua, if you were going to run, you should have taken money. A hungry wolf is a dangerous wolf. And if one of the Grigori besides Elise – and perhaps including Elise – ran across him publically losing his temper, then theyd kill him. If the boy didnt want to stay with him, so be it. But if he honestly liked the boy, then he should protect him by getting him to someone else to care for him. The wolves or the Grigori. The wolves. Decker reached for his phone and discovered it gone. What? You leave the money but take the phone? That doesnt make sense. He realized then that the urn full of coins was missing and his house keys. You only take keys when you need to get back into a locked house! Yes! Yes! Yes! He went out to get food! Hes coming back! The happiness only lasted a minute until he realized that the boy should be back already. Hed told Joshua hed take him out for a big steak dinner. He was just hungry, he would have left hours ago, not shortly before sunset. Somethings happened to him! I need to find him. How can I find him? Wait, he found Elise with my phone, I bet Elise can him! Decker reached for his phone and then realized that he couldnt call Elise without his phone. Oh good god, why did they ever give up operators? You pick up the receiver and talk to a real, honest human being and shed figure out what you needed. It was so simple, I could even do it! Someone started up the front steps. Keys jingled and he realized that his puppy had made it home. He shouldnt let him know how worried he was. Decker headed for his chair. Hed act like he was patiently waiting. No, wait, what if something bad had really happened? Wouldnt it be better to show him how concerned he really was? He was doing this frantic side-to-side step when the door opened. His puppy looked scared to death. He walked into the foyer and thumped against Deckers chest with a whimper. Decker put his arms around the boy, who was shaking like a leaf. Whats wrong? Decker said. I do not drive that bad! Elise called from the front steps as she followed with several bags of groceries. Oh! Oh! Poor thing. He really should have warned the boy never to get into a car with the girl.
