Dee Basile Most cats with Over Stimulation issues can be helped. These are the cats that will let you pet them for a few minutes before they just seem to explode with anger and bite. This issue is triggered by an intolerance to something that feels good at first but stops feeling good and turns quickly to annoyance. The cat cant tell you *please stop* so they wait until they truly do just explode with annoyance and anger. The human is left in bewilderment over why the cat who seemed to enjoy the activity suddenly became dangerous and aggressive. Follow Jaxsons advice and play with the cat with toys never your hands. The ultimate outcome is to help the cat learn to tolerate more petting. To do this there are things you must learn to do and be consistent. You must never reach out to the cat absent mindedly, when you pet the cat watch his body language. The cat will always give a warning sign before he loses control and bites. These warnings are usually subtle but it will be the same sign each time (with this cat anyway, so different signals with different cats is the norm). The signal might be a tensing of muscles, twitching or twitch of his tail or ears. When you realize what his signal to reaching intolerance is, stop petting and either stand or carefully push him off your lap and ignore him. Most cats are surprised at their own behavior and will often seem sorry. So be gentle in voice and action, scolding will only make the cat more stressed, just walk away and give him time. So the desirable outcome is to pet the cat until before he cant take more, then walk away from him. Consistently what will happen is eventually he will be able to stay a little longer each session, and he will also learn on his own when to walk away from the behavior that he likes but also finds intolerable, after awhile. Ive done this with many cats over the years, it is just a matter of helping them learn a behavior of tolerance.
