Deeper Than Surface -Street Poet (Antwane) Every saint has a past, Every sinner has a future. A sinner can turn into Martin Luther, And a saint could have been Lex Luthor. Judging a book by a cover, When youve barely read the cover. Condemning your sister or brother, Without reading pages beneath the cover. Every smile has a tear, And every pain has a light of hope. Every sorrow has a glimpse of joy, And a bad present can present better tomorrows. Not every bird flies on first attempt, Just like every baby doesnt walk instantly. Not every policeman is bad, Not all blacks can be sized up criminally. Everything has a contrast, Like the White House full of black hearts. Everyone is a work of art, But the finished picture isnt found in the very start. The first stroke of paint on a canvas, Doesnt give you the masterpiece. And those that extends the hand of peace, May suffer the lack of inner peace. Look what Im trying to say, Is that everything is deeper than the surface. But we highlight idiosyncrasies, Because in our world were perfect. We think that we know a lot, And thats when we know the least. In this society its hard to stand, But we fall with ease. Some people wake up everyday, And suffer from an anxiety. For some of us its a struggle, Just to deal with reality. Maybe its a struggle just to remember, Who we are as individuals. Some can barely see their worth, Because they can only see the pitiful. Some beat themselves up, For not being what theyve envisioned. Some broken hearts pretend to be whole, Just to prevent further damage. And... Some of you are just like me. Hiding pains behind the smile, Just to bring about positivity. I dont want to sound preachy, But please look below the surface. Because sometimes we just see the beauty of a flower, And forget the roots below the surface. That had to struggle to blossom, That had to fight to survive. That had to take 16 or less hours of sunlight, And make the most of them to thrive. Because when night falls, Our worlds are just the same. Mine is yours, yours is mine, We all struggle just the same.
