Demerara Waves learnt of the alleged kidnapping of businessman - TopicsExpress

Demerara Waves learnt of the alleged kidnapping of businessman Rajendra Singh Saturday evening shortly after the incident. We confirmed with security forces that they had received such a report but we decided the responsible thing was not to publish it so that we wouldnt jeopardise any police action or the alleged victims life. Lo and behold Inews ran with the story about an hour later. It was disappointing to say the least but then I recalled that the same entity recently defended the publication of a hanged child by saying it would not hold back the truth for the sake of responsible reporting. Apparently, not even in life and death situations. But what took the cake was the police issuing a press release on the kidnapping. My flabber was pretty gasted by this. It is obvious that they have no protocol whatsoever, or none informed by what occurs in other jurisdictions, when it comes to dealing with kidnappings. But even if that is the case common sense would dictate that you seek the cooperation of the media in holding the story for a while. If a lowly crow like me knows that then surely the brain trust at CID couldnt be so clueless. I truly hope Mr. Singh is returned to his family safely.
