Democracy, by its very nature, contains a power struggle which divides people in groups, highlights the conflicting elements and ignores the common elements and common causes. In democratic societies literature assumes primary role as serious custodian of common causes. Who else does ? All people suffering the pain of common ailments are one. To think about these ailments is their common cause and concern. Ignorance, poverty, pain, joy, love, dreams, freedom etc. are our common cause. In a democracy literature is custodian of these causes. Wherever there is darkness writers must detect and illuminate. Where ever there are complexities and complications writers must act as thinkers and achieve clarity. Mental blockades and emotional complications need attention of writers. Writers : not as scientists, social scientist, economists or activists but as the custodians of the growing wisdom of the society. As custodian of the health of human mind. This is necessary for balancing the inherent divisive working style of democracy. I think in our society the literature has simply failed in its responsibility.
