Democratic Alliance press statement by Jacques Smalle DA Limpopo Provincial Leader No rent paid for “Millionaire’s Lounge” at Polokwane International 6 August 2013 The bar lounge which is currently being operated at the Polokwane International Airport is not generating any revenue for the airport. This is revealed in a reply to a DA parliamentary question to the Minister of Transport in the National Assembly. Gateway Airports Authority Limited (GAAL) must explain under what circumstances a third party is allowed to operate a lounge at this Airport without any rental agreement. This lounge called the Millionaire’s Lounge is owned and financially benefits a private individual. It caters for the elite of the province who can afford and it cannot be run at the public’s expense. This is an utter waste of the public coffers. GAAL, which runs this airport, is a provincial state entity under the Department of Roads and Transport. It receives its operating revenue from the Department and for 2013/14 financial year this totalled R45 million. GAAL cannot be using any of the Airport’s space to benefit a private individual when itself it had to rely on government bailouts since its inception. The MEC of Roads and Transport, Mr. Lehlohonolo Masoga must urgently get to the bottom of this by cancelling whatever agreement is there with the owner of this lounge until rental fees are stipulated and agreed upon. GAAL officials must also explain how they allowed this situation in the first place.
