Democratic Alliance press statement by Langa Bodlani DA Limpopo Premier Candidate Zuma’s ANC cuts off water and electricity for 84 year old 11 March 2013 Release: immediate Today, I visited Grandma Eunice Kgwatla, 84 and her 30 year old disabled granddaughter Andronica of Zone 3 Seshego whose water and electricity have been cut off. With the water and electricity off; this family cannot cook or use the bathroom in their own home. Grandma Kgwatla’s bill runs to just a little over R2000. She is a pensioner who has to look after her disabled granddaughter and her 4 children. Andronica suffered a stroke in 2011 and although she gets a disability grant, it is largely used to treat her medical condition. Ms. Kgwatla is struggling to pay off her bill from her meagre pension grant. Just last month she paid R500 out of the R1000 she gets. Her water and electricity were cut off without any warning from the municipal officials. She queries the high bill because although she admits that she owes, she has been making serious attempts to settle her bills. Just a couple of houses away from her house is another house owned by another pensioner who also cannot understand why her bills are also sky rocketing when she only lives with her grandchild in the house. What is happening to Grandma Kgwatla is callousness of extreme proportions. It raises serious concerns about the responsiveness of Zuma’s officials to the plight faced by our people. The DA will get to the bottom of whether this family is covered by government’s indigent policy. A DA government in Limpopo will have a comprehensive database of families such as the Kgwatla family is order to make sure that they are assisted at all times by government.
