Democrats Double Student Loan Rates Stafford student loan rates will double July 1 because Senate Democrats and the president failed to act. House Republicans passed a relief package last month. Senate Republicans worked out a bipartisan solution, but Harry Reid refused to bring it to the floor. When student loan rates double next month, grads will have the Democrats to blame. Republicans did everything they could to fix the problem. Democrats drug their feet and played politics, opposing a plan that was partly based on an idea from the president himself.
