Denis Coderre Played Key Role in Destruction of Haitis Democracy. October 25, 2013 Now a candidate for Mayor of Montreal, Liberal MP ran interference for coup détat, campaign of violent repression. In February 2004, Canada participated in a coup détat which removed Haitis democratically elected government, and unleashed a multi-year reign of terror by the unelected interim government, which enjoyed Canadas financial, diplomatic and military support. In the years following the coup, thousands were killed for their opposition to the unelected post-coup government, while thousands more were jailed or forced into hiding. Denis Coderre, who nearly ten years later is the front runner in Montreals mayoral election, played a key role during the decisive moments of the coup. Coderre, who was Minister responsible for La Francophonie in 2003 and 2004, was also Prime Minister Paul Martins special advisor on Haiti during the post-coup period. In the leadup to the coup, Coderres false and misleading statements were decisive in confusing and misdirecting nascent opposition to Canadas participation in overthrowing a democratically elected government. In official circles, much of the deception holds to this day. It is clear that we dont want Aristides head; we believe that Aristide should stay, Coderre told the Canadian Press on February 20, 2004, nine days before Canadian troops landed in Haiti, facilitating the removal of Aristide (who had been elected president with 80% of the vote) and the elected government, paving the way for the installation of hand-picked replacements. via Haiti Justice Alliance
