Denmark provides USD 2.5 million for new gender initiative Today, Denmark together with Oxfam Novib and its Pakistani partners launched the Gender Empowerment and Institutional Development Program. The launching ceremony was held at the University of AJK (Muzaffarabad campus), where more than 150 young students, public sector officials, religious scholars, civil society organizations and media participated. Young women and girls are often deprived of exercising their reproductive health rights. The program aims to foster an enabling environment for effective citizenship and responsive governance that supports youth without any discrimination. During the launch, the audience was engaged in a dialogue on early marriages, gender and youth rights through an interactive play performance. Ambassador Sorensen was the Chief guest at the launch. On behalf of the Danish Government, he announced the Danish funding of 15 million kroner (USD 2,5 million). He explained how women empowerment and gender equality are central features in Denmarks foreign and development policy. Did you know that in Pakistan, 40 percent of girls are married before the age of 18? Early marriages do not only deny children their basic right to good health and education. It also makes them more vulnerable to become victims of violence, abuse and exploitation.
