Denmark supports 35 Dar-ul-Amans (DUA) in Punjab. Today the Social Welfare Department (SWD), Government of Punjab and the Academy of Family Physicians Lahore, Pakistan (PAFP) signed a MoU to provide free medical services to residents of 35 Dar-ul-Amans (DUAs) in Punjab. The partnership is part of an overall program to structure and upgrade protection services for women and children who seek shelter as victims of domestic violence and abuse. It is being financially supported by Denmark and Norway in collaboration with our partners Médecins du Monde France (MdM) and the Social Welfare Department, Punjab. Ambassador Sorensen and Mr. Syed Haroon Sultan Bukhari, Provincial Minister of Social Welfare participated as speakers and guest of honor. Speaking at the signing ceremony, Ambassador Sorensen congratulated the parties. He appreciated the role of the Dar-ul-Aman in protecting vulnerable women and children. “It is an important initiative as these shelter homes provide victims shelter, protection and knowledge about their rights. They also help give them hope and the opportunity to rebuild their lives”, said Ambassador Sorensen. Mr. Vittorio Oppizzi, General Coordinator MDM shared that due to the program success, MDM expects to phase out soon from the program and hand it over to the Department of Social Welfare for future supervision and management. Currently the 35 DUAs are providing shelter and protection services to around 75,000 individuals, out of which around 80 per cent are women and 20 per cent are children.
