Dennis wrote--I am a Navy veteran who had his leg amputated below the knee on my right leg on November 21, 2013. I have learned to adapt to my prosthetic leg with the help of my prosthesis From the (omitted) clinic in Madison Wisconsin and the occupational, and physical therapy at the VA Hospital in Madison. My amputation was from the foot infection I aquired and instead of removing individual parts one at a time, I chose to had the leg amputated below the knee to get ahead of the infections. In 1999 I had all of my toes removed on the same foot because I am antibiotic resistant and all of the antibiotics would not stop the infections I kept getting so I went through 5 surgeries in 6 months at the VA. This is why I decided not to do piece meal on my leg when it came time to do the surgery for my leg amputation. During my amputation I kept my sense of humor and a vision in my head that I would walk without any support like I would have with with my real leg and I have done that. I even managed to learn to drive my car left footed without a specially adapted car. I am told by those that have helped me adapt that I mentioned earlier that I am braking their curve for recovery and in fact they are putting me on the list to be approved for my final prosthetic leg because I am so advanced in my recovery. Usually they wait at least a year to do this but I am ahead of the curve. I should note that I am 61 years old and a diabetic as well. I also talk to other amputees at the VA Hospital to help inspire them and show them there is hope and life after amputation to become independent and remain that way after amputation.
