Dental assistants, represented by Lawyers for Human Rights, have scored a significant victory in the North Gauteng High Court in challenging an application by dentists to set aside policies establishing the dental assistants profession. Dental assistants were not recognised as a profession by the Health Professions Council and had no one to supervise the scope of their work and protect their interests. This significant ruling will mean better recognition and protection for this vulnerable group of around 5 000 dental assistants - the majority of which are women - who face daily power struggles in the workplace. As part of the ruling, the judge recommended that the Health Minister revisit outstanding areas of the requirements for registration of the profession.
