Denver International Airport sunflower fields....Another - TopicsExpress

Denver International Airport sunflower fields....Another sunflower shot with rain this time.....the cloud chunks in the background look like something is falling from the sky....looks totally weird to me. The rain, hail and lightning were literally all around me....but during my evening shoot, not one drop of rain landed on the sunflower field I was shooting...it was pure luck- no way around it....... but overnight- it got drenched because my morning attempts to shoot the fields ended in a mud bath- literally. I shot this in very dark light...and I find that when I adjust my ISO in lieu of my shutter speed adjustment, I get a LOT less noise.....shooting in dark situations is just tricky. I took my accessory flash and put it on a tripod about 3 feet off the camera and set it on a low (or negative) setting to keep the power of the flash a few feet in front of me.....on my (plus) settings my SB700 flash really throws the light forward.....where the negative setting keeps it hovering near the camera...... I didnt want my horizon line to be blown out so I could use a really long exposure (so a flash became the best answer)..... using that flash remotely allowed me more overall- wide spread flash power because I also used my in-camera flash.....Also it was windy, so I knew I had to keep me shutter speed fairly quick. My final settings were ISO 400 1/125 @ f 8 with a polarizer...and a blue gradient filter stacked on top a gradient ND 1 stop filter.....for more drama in the sky..... I kept the blue above the horizon sun/rain line but pulled the gradient down to temper the sun a bit.....allowing the sunflowers to appear brighter or more balanced..... In post I used CS6 only; I lassod different areas of the background flowers to brightened them.... I reduced blue in the sky a bit by adding yellow....I added a little contrast....and used the wand on a few of the front flowers to reduce the expose to -.8...... just a smidgeon in other words. I also used the wand to highlight a large portion of the sky then utilized surface blur to reduce the noise in the sky instead of using a de-noise function to soften the clouds.
