Department Hands over Equipment and Attire to Schools, Clubs and Teams The MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Mrs. Mathabo Leeto handed over Sport equipment and attire to 136 schools and 70 sport clubs at an event held at Phahamisanang Primary School in Meloding township, Virginia on 13 November 2014. The 136 Schools were identified by Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation and Department of Education based on the following criteria: • Quintile 1, 2 and 3 Schools in the province • Previously disadvantaged schools. • Top Schools 2013 Provincial competitions winners • Schools that are currently actively participating in sport. • Proximity to one another to facilitate league running. • Willing principal, willing school and willing SGB. • Schools that are currently actively participating in sport. Schools in the province were supported with equipment and attire since 2006 as follows: • 2006: 50 schools supported • 2007: 40 schools supported • 2008: 56 schools supported • 2011: 323 schools supported • 2012: 323 schools supported • 2013: 136 schools supported • 2014: 136 Schools received Since the inception of this programme, to date 1064 schools benefited from Sport Equipment and Playing attire distributed by the Department. Of the 136 schools in the province, 9 schools are located in Xhariep District, 31 schools in Mangaung Metropolitan municipality, 27 schools in Fezile Dabi District, 26 schools in Lejweleputswa District and 45 Schools in Thabo Mofutsanyana District. Apart from the 136 identified schools, the Department support 5 Sport Focus Schools, namely: Louis Botha Secondary School in Bloemfontein, Seotlong Secondary School in Qwa Qwa, Dr Reginald Cingo in Kroonstad, Harmony High School in Virginia and Olien Secondary School in Fauresmith. The athletes are developed holistically from support of sport equipment and attire, high performance training programmes and capacity building of teachers and qualified coaches for sport codes. MEC Leeto also handed over sport attire and equipment to 7 teams that consist of ex-gang members. These teams were created to assist the community in using sport to fight the ongoing fight against gangstarism and crime. The Sport Councilor in Lejweleputswa has also committed to the creation of a league system to accommodate these teams. MEC Leeto further distributed playing equipment Community Sport Clubs. These clubs were identified earlier in the year from all five districts to be part of the Club Development Programme. Attire and equipment were handed over for the following codes: • Netball • Table tennis • Cricket • Football. All these codes are taking place in different towns in a league format with the main aim of assisting sport clubs playing in un-organized sport activities and developing them to become professional clubs. Each school, club and team received the following: Code Equipment Soccer • Balls • Bibs • Cones Netball • Balls • Goal poles • Bibs • Cones • Nets Table Tennis • Tables • Balls • Bats • Nets Cricket • Match balls • Practice Balls • Bats • Cloves • Pads • Helmets
