Depression. Suicide. Many of our lives have been touched, - TopicsExpress

Depression. Suicide. Many of our lives have been touched, affected, impacted, devastated by these two hard-to-discuss topics. (And Im not qualified to open such a discourse here on Facebook.) But Robin Williams, you masterfully reached inside of me once again and struck a chord -- albeit not from your comedic genius or brilliant acting, both of which this world and I will sorely miss. No, oh Captain, my Captain, you left us spellbound one last time. Only I hope this final act of yours sets off a chain reaction throughout the medical profession and society in general. Its not your fault. No, sport. Its not your fault. But it IS societys fault. We can no longer view depression as a personal weakness. We can no longer dismiss suicide as a selfish act of giving up. We all must make an effort to see the signs being given by our friends, family, coworkers and casual acquaintances. Surely we can look up from our smart devices to notice a visual cue or detect subtle body language, right? Is it too much to ask to remove our earbuds once in awhile and listen actively…I mean really engage in a conversation? Who knows, we might actually feel human more often. So why am I typing all of this instead of posting some nostalgic #TBT photo like Im usually prone to do? My head, heart and soul need this purge-by-prose, thats why. I lost my favorite uncle to suicide when I was in high school. I dealt with depression after my third knee surgery in college. I know it can absolutely invade the psyche of those wed never suspect. And Im thankful I have always had a close family and some incredibly wonderful friends who would not hesitate to ask very simple, yet extremely powerful questions… ARE YOU OKAY? IS SOMETHING WRONG? WHATS REALLY ON YOUR MIND? This is just my $0.02 worth… brought on by the unimaginable passing of an idol from my youth… rekindled by personal memories of suicide & depression from long ago… then fully driven home by a song on my iPod a few minutes ago. Im including the lyrics and a link. Read the words, listen to the song and maybe, just maybe, consider asking someone you know one very basic but potentially life-saving question: Are You Alright? Are you all right? All of a sudden you went away Are you all right? I hope you come back around someday. Are you all right? I havent seen you in a real long time. Are you all right? Could you give me some kind of sign? Are you all right? I looked around me and you were gone. Are you all right? I feel like there must be something wrong. Are you all right? Cause it seems like you disappeared. Are you all right? Cause Ive been feeling a little scared. Are you all right? Are you sleeping through the night? Do you have someone to hold you tight? Do you have someone to hang out with? Do you have someone to hug & kiss you? Hug & kiss you Hug & kiss you Are you all right? Are you all right? Is there something been bothering you? Are you all right? I wish youd give me a little clue. Are you all right? Is there something you want to say? Are you all right? Just tell me that youre OK. Are you all right? Cause you took off without a word. Are you all right? You flew away like a little bird. Are you all right? Is there anything I can do? Are you all right? Cause I need to hear from you. Are you all right? Are you sleeping through the night? Do you have someone to hold you tight? Do you have someone to hang out with? Do you have someone to hug & kiss you? Hug & kiss you Hug & kiss you Are you all right? Are you all right? Are you all right? (These lyrics and more can found on azlyrics) NOW GO LISTEN TO THE SONG… ; )
