Depression is not like a cold or a migraine or any other illness - TopicsExpress

Depression is not like a cold or a migraine or any other illness that you may wake up with one morning, knowing that if you visit a doctor or pharmacy you will be able to receive an amount of relief relatively inexpensively relatively quickly. It is a complex set of circumstances accompanied with an even more complex mind set that gives little warning when its chemical imbalance will ebb and tide. The complexity is even more enchanted by the fact that while medication can relieve to a degree and mask the symptoms so that the sufferer might feel almost normal it rarely is completely cured by medication alone. On top of this sufferers either become the best actors, deserving of academy awards to the point that most of us dont realize that we have a best friend, a neighbor, son, daughter, girlfriend, boyfriend or a mate that has been suffering in silence for way too long but hides it very very well. Or they become victims of their own circumstances. Our lives are surrounded by complexities far greater than most of our forefathers who taught us not to speak of our short comings or inner struggles or feelings. Our current generation is taught to communicate with technology with no feeling, compassion or thought of the impact of the written word. Educators and medics need to walk a fine line between teaching us to express our needs, accept genuine help and be proud of who we are inside and out without condemnation or false sympathies. While teaching us to accept who we are and the value we have to our families, community and society but most importantly to ourselves. As a community we need to be able to feel confident in ourselves to see the changes in the people around us, offer our help without pushing our opinions and being strong enough to say its ok to be who you are and its acceptable to seek help to gain normality in your life without being judged. Look, watch, listen and ask are you ok
