MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Southern Arkansas University has announced that it will add nine new members to its Sports Hall of Fame as the 12th all-time induction class was elected by SAUs Hall of Fame induction committee earlier this month. This newest class will be formally inducted during a ceremony at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17, in the Grand Hall of the Donald W. Reynolds Campus and Community Center. The class will also be publicly introduced at halftime of the Oct. 18 game against Southern Nazarene. The 2014 Southern Arkansas University Sports Hall of Fame class is comprised of eight former SAU student-athlete standouts as well as one coach. Among those inductees are the following: Tony Garcia (Modern Era – Baseball) Tony GarciaTony Garcia, who is widely regarded as one of the best hitters of all-time within the illustrious history of Mulerider baseball, played at SAU for two years (1986-1987). In his two seasons with the Muleriders, Garcia would amass a .424 career batting average and a .783 career slugging percentage. Both of those marks still stand as career records within the Mulerider baseball program. In his junior season of 1986, Garcia was named as an All-Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference (AIC) First Baseman and played on the South team in the AIC All-Star game. Later that year, Garcia was also named as a NAIA All-District 17 performer at First Base. In his senior season of 1987, Garcia was one the key cogs for a Mulerider team that would go an impressive 46-7 overall while finishing third in the NAIA College World Series. That year would see Garcia rack up more individual honors as he earned NAIA All-Area V and NAIA All-America Honorable Mention recognition in addition to repeating as All-AIC and All-District 17 at First Base. In addition to his two career records still standing, Garcia remains a record-holder in slugging percentage in a season (.830 – 1987), walks in a season (58 – 1987) and runs scored in a game (6 – 1987 vs. Arkansas Tech).
