Design Essentials | March E-news 2014 Secrets for Lightweight & Bouncy Hair by Tara Y. Coyt For most of us the winter has been long and treacherous, and by now you are probably looking for familiar signs of Spring-pastel colors, blooming flowers, and hair thats free to move, bounce, and flow. Even if snow is still on the ground in your hometown, we think its time to let your hair feel the lightness of Spring. The first step to consider is visiting your hairstylist for a rejuvenating haircut, whether its a completely new style or to cut split ends, and a deep moisturizing conditioning treatment. Taking these steps is important because hair that has split ends or is unevenly cut will behave as if its weighed down; it wont move. Hair that is dry or damaged will look dull, flat and lifeless instead of being light and bouncy. As always, hair that is clean and well conditioned provides the best results. Dirty hair is heavy and will not bounce or hold curls. Choosing the right shampoo is also important because you want to get hair clean without stripping it of natural oils. To prevent this from happening, look for gentle shampoos that dont strip hair and that add moisture. Women who suffer from dry itchy scalp can benefit from also applying a therapeutic shampoo that helps control flaking and relieves dryness and itching. If you dont have time to deep condition opt for an instant conditioner that can moisturize and repair in three-to-five minutes. Women with straight or chemically relaxed hair can choose a moisturizing wrap lotion that sets and molds without flaking. After the hair dries and has been combed and brushed out, apply a heat protectant that seals the cuticle and locks in moisture, then bump with a flat iron. Finish with a lightweight gloss for added shine. Naturally curly and dont want to use any heat? A moisturizing mousse will do the trick. Just smooth or scrunch into your hair and with your fingers or a wide tooth comb to quickly define and hold curls. You can diffuse your hair or just allow it to dry naturally. Either way youll get light, bouncy curls. When more curl is desired use a moisturizing setting lotion that imparts a strong hold without flaking, then use rollers and sit under the hair dryer. The result will be bouncy curls that last longer than those created with a flat iron or curling iron, and theres the added benefit of not applying direct heat to the hair. Lightweight bouncy hairstyles can be achieved with healthy moisturized hair and products that dont weigh down or dry the hair.
