Designer-to-Watch Karla Špetic During the last month, I spent - TopicsExpress

Designer-to-Watch Karla Špetic During the last month, I spent countless hours researching international designers for the first article in a series I’m writing on overseas talent. (Check it out here.) Of all the looks I viewed, only one stared right back: Karla Špetić’s face-print dress. Here’s the backstory: Born in Dubrovnik, Croatia, Špetić moved to Australia as a war refugee with her family at the age of 10. The Sydney-based designer’s first collection debuted in 2008; but, despite love from the Aussie fashion set, she has only recently garnered mainstream visibility stateside. Shopbop and Moda Operandi, along with several smaller boutiques, now carry her line. The current spring/summer lineup taps into some of the season’s biggest trends: sheer paneling, mixed-media construction, and, most daring, pop art portraits. In a face-off with other designers who courted the look (Prada, JC de Castelbajac), Špetić gets my vote. Her drop-waist dress with a fluttery hem and various tops with bold, painterly angel visages are avant-garde yet wearable — even if you aren’t an outlandish street style star. Also, they don’t require a loan. If Špetić is the face of Australian fashion to come, I’m definitely down (under). Available at karlaspetic and modaoperandi, $285-$585.
