Despite pouring rain, scores of social and political activists participated in peace rally at Jaloo Moor near Wagha border today on the eve of independence day of Pakistan. They raised slogans “end borders tension, Peace, not war, rise for peace and we want bread not bullet. The peace rally was organized by PEOPLE,s SAARC Pakistan. Prominent among participants included Samina Umer Asghar Khan head of SOS Lahore, Shahida Jabeen member federal council Pakistan Peoples Party, Farooq Tariq general secretary Awami Workers Party, Mehmood But general secretary Punjab Bhatta Mazdoor Union, Niaz Khan general secretary National Trade Union Federation Punjab, Sajid Baluch of ASR Resource Centre, Nawab Nazim, columnist Maqsood Mujahid, senior journalist and poet, Ihsan Nawab advocate High court and others. Speaking on the occasion, Farooq Tariq said that Pakistan and India must end border tensions. The war like situation is creating a lot of insecurity among those living on borders. Working class of both countries will be at loosing end if the war started between the two countries. India must accept offer of negotiation by Mian Nawaz Sharif and start dialogue to resolve all the pending issues and also the killing of five Indian soldiers. He said Peoples SAARC will mobilize peoples voices for peace and will organize more activities to cool down the rising war temperature. There was a very good response by the local people who joined the peace rally and raised slogans for peace. Those going to Wagha border waved hands when they read the slogans of the rally. It was very clear from the response today that majority of Pakistanis do not want war with India and would like to normalize the relationship between th two countries. The protesters remained for over one and half hour in the rain.
