Despite the wars this past decade, the number of veterans in the United States will decline rapidly by 2030. Without conscription and as our soldiers from WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the first Persian Gulf War and other military efforts age and pass away, the veterans of our times will represent a small percentage of our population. The VA medical system was built at a time when most men served; centralized and massive, the VA system doesnt often fit in well with a more diverse, dispersed and smaller veteran population. It often requires veterans to travel miles to see doctors or medical professionals. This new effort below isnt simply to provide funding to get the health insurance system in check, but will now allow what has long been necessary: letting our veterans stay close to home and get the intimate medical needs they deserve in their own communities. Whether private or public services, it is a smart step for a new generation of veterans who will be with us a long time and who are being serviced by a system that was built for a military that simply no longer exists.
