As a Peace Corps Volunteer in the African nation of Mozambique, I gained professional experience teaching English to high school students who spoke indigenous languages and Portuguese. Although disappointed that I didn’t know any celebrities, the boys and girls were thrilled to have an American instructor. “Teacher,” they asked, “when can we start an English club?” Because the club proved so popular, we also organized an English-only drama troupe and school newspaper. My students were bright and motivated, always eager to learn American slang and culture from me. My biggest contribution, however, was to pass on leadership skills so they could successfully continue these projects after I left.
