Destiny’s “Dream” team head to Washington Aug 26, 2013 | DCMedia | No comment | Church News Today, 12 immensely proud members of Destiny’s haka team embark on the experience of a lifetime; to perform in Wednesday’s “Let Freedom Ring” Commemorations at the Lincoln Memorial, Washington DC. It marks 50 years to the day that Dr. King delivered his signature speech, “I Have A Dream.” For the group, it is the culmination of 3-weeks intense preparation after Bishop Brian Tamaki received formal invitation from Dr. King’s daughter and CEO of The King Center, Bernice A. King. The group delivered a spine-tingling performance to a packed house in church yesterday, which included an impromptu visit from Auckland mayoral election candidate John Palino. Their uniform (as pictured above) was inspired and created by church member Erika Muna Lee especially for Wednesday’s occasion. A traditional carving to be gifted to The King Center was also displayed, designed by one of Destiny’s master carvers. Says kaea (haka leader) Stacey Tukariri, “We’re mindful our people know haka better than anybody, so in a sense, we were under a good level of pressure. Now we’re fine-tuning and focused on the task at hand, which is to deliver the haka of a lifetime in front of a massive US audience.” That audience will include headline speakers Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter. Iconic personalities Oprah Winfrey and Grammy/Oscar winner Jamie Foxx are also involved. Performers include LeAnn Rimes and contemporary Christian artist, Natalie Grant. The group has an arduous itinerary, arriving in Washington around 2am Tuesday (US time) for a full day of rehearsals. Local media has already expressed interest in meeting the team, including Washington’s BBC. PBS will be live-streaming the event, commencing about 11am Wednesday 28 August Washington time.
