Devlyn Camp sent me the promo video for the long-overdue film - TopicsExpress

Devlyn Camp sent me the promo video for the long-overdue film version of The Normal Heart. From what I saw I like the way theyre using exteriors (Fire Island etc.) to evoke the storys time and setting, though to be honest it doesnt look like I remember it: too glossy, not gritty enough. Obviously the film is aimed at a younger audience, and thats good. I hope it pisses young people off and scares them. And Im glad for Larry Kramer that he got to see the film of his 1985 play finally made presumably as he wanted it to be made, since hes credited with the screenplay. I also hope it will prompt younger people to catch up with the fairly extensive body of past films about AIDS, including Philadelphia (for which Tom Hanks won an Oscar), Rent, Buddies, An Early Frost (starring Aidan Quinn, Terry OQuinn, Bill Paxton, and D.W. Moffett), Longtime Companion (written by Craig Lucas and starring Campbell Scott, Dermot Mulroney, and Bruce Davison), And the Band Played On (starring Matthew Modine, Alan Alda, Ian McKellen, Lily Tomlin, B.D. Wong, Steve Martin, Richard Gere, and Anjelica Huston) Jeffrey (starring Steven Weber, Patrick Stewart, Christine Baranski, Sigourney Weaver, Kathy Najimy, Olympia Dukakis, and Nathan Lane), Love! Valour! Compassion (starring Jason Alexander), Parting Glances (starring Steve Buscemi in his first major role), and of course Angels in America (starring Meryl Streep, Al Pacino, Mary-Louise Parker, Emma Thompson, and Justin Kirk). The fact that most young moviegoers have never seen or even heard of most of those films is a reflection of the short attention span syndrome in pop culture. https://youtube/watch?v=XMN75Opf1_A
