Dialogue for Inter-faith... Hindu orthodox view is that it is not right prayer to say RIP for a departed Hindu soul. RIP is a prayer mostly for the departed followers Christian faith. According to Bible, a person who dies without Christ is not “resting in peace” and stands condemned (see John 3:18). “‘There is no peace,’ says my God, ‘for the wicked’” (Isaiah 57:21). And as per Christian belief those who are dead in Christ are resting in peace for the day of rapture, for the day of resurrection, for the day of final judgement. ...he hath appointed a day, in which he will judge the world... Pauls (Acts 17:31 King James Version) and ...there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust. Pauls (Acts 24:15 KJV). Rest in peace word is theologically applicable for only Christian believers. It is not correct to say such a prayer to non-Christians. Hindu belief towards death is entirely different. It is clearly said in Bhagwad Gita that soul keeps going through the inevitable cycle of birth and death. (Bhgawad Gita 2-27) Therefore the Hindu orthodox view is that RIP should not be said for a departed Hindu soul unless the soul is already converted and expected to be risen during the judgement day in Christian belief... -Madhava Turumella
