Diary of an OTTB: Capture the Crown. This is the by far the most difficult horse I have ever had, a proper handful, he used to spin (Crazy Ivans) and would try to bolt if he didnt want to do stuff. I couldnt canter him without him wanting to take a hold and run, trying to pull my arms out of their sockets. A hard mouth? he was like a railway track. Now he reacts to me squeezing my hands like squeezing a sponge. Only fingers. Today I took him to late Wednesday chukkas and was just cantering around with the players, letting horses run past him, towards him, he was fully in the bunch, running next to players and going faster and slower than them. He was on a loose rein, hardly did a thing wrong, didnt flinch, didnt shy away. Beautifully collected when I asked flexed at the poll, head in the perfect position. Instead of that crazy look in his eye, his eye relaxed his ears on me. I then took him into one of the tournament paddocks and did some stop and turns, turning into the fence. No pressure with the hands other than lifting them mostly voice and weight. Left slide marks on the ground 4 - 5 ft long - I dont know what it looked like from the side but it felt like he was sitting on the ground when I asked him to stop. His flying changes are not perfect yet. But this is the horse voted most likely to be lion feed. Just not worth persevering with. How rewarding is that?
