Did You Really Just Say That? A couple of weeks ago, I heard a song on a Christian radio station that basically says the message of God’s grace is that, even when I blow it and get defeated, it doesn’t matter because Jesus won the victory on the cross. While occasional sin in a Christian’s life will not send you to hell because God sees us through the blood of Jesus, can we honestly say sin and defeat don’t matter? Of course they matter! Kenneth Wuest explains that Romans 6 answers two questions – the question of whether or not the Christian should plan on sinning intentionally since grace has paid for it and the question of the Christian planning on occasional sin because it is paid for…and the answer to both is “No.” Paul explains that the Christian is a slave to righteousness rather than sin. Maybe the song doesn’t mean sin doesn’t matter, but only that when we don’t overcome everything victoriously, God’s grace is big enough, and that is lovingly true. So, why does it matter? For one thing, we bear His name and our lives testify to who Jesus is, so, when we blow it, lost people and other Christians get false messages about who Jesus is and what life is about. Additionally, we miss out on what He intended to bless us with. Finally, actions set things in motion that don’t stop or get undone just because God grants forgiveness. But, most of us know this, and I probably need to write about not beating ourselves up over sin we need to surrender to God’s grace. But we can get tempted to take it lightly sometimes. The main point here may be to be careful about what you hear, read, etc. Just because it claims to be Christian does not mean it is true. Be aware, and filter everything through God’s Word.
