In 1805 the average price of a male field slave was $550, which is about $10,000 in 2010 dollars. The cost of keeping the slave was about $280 per year in 2010 dollars. A slave could produce up to 3,000 pounds of cotton per year in favorable conditions, valued at $5.6 per pound, for a total value of $16,800. So that slave that cost $10,000 generated over 1.6 times that in just one year. Everything after the first growing season is mostly profit for the slave owner. This does not include the value of the offspring they produced or other chores/tasks they performed. And this is what happens when you have questionable morals and devalue human life in a capitalist society.
