Middle Terrace, Castle Green - 1960 and July 2014 Tucked away in - TopicsExpress

Middle Terrace, Castle Green - 1960 and July 2014 Tucked away in a corner of Castle Green behind Castle School and overlooking Broad Weir were three rows of two-up, two-down terraced houses, known as Lower, Middle and Upper Terrace. Built in the early 1900s, the houses had no electricity, an outside toilet in a small backyard and no bathrooms (Broad Weir Baths were not far away). Some of the houses in Upper Terrace had large cellars which were believed to be part of Bristol Castle. The 1960 photo shows Middle Terrace - these houses had small front gardens useful for drying the weekly wash. In the background can be seen the post-war shops in Broad Weir, since demolished. The Terraces survived the war despite the destruction of the nearby Castle Street area in the blitz. However, they were demolished in 1962 and the subsequent landscaping of Castle Park has removed all vestiges of this small community. One of trees which grew among the houses survived and grows in the park near the adventure playground. The 2014 shows the area once occupied by the three Terraces - Im sure the residents would be astonished to know that there is a branch of the luxury store Harvey Nichols just across the road from the site of their old houses.
