Did you Know........ - 1 in 3 Australian women have experienced one form of violence. (Mouzos and Makkai 2004). - Children witness 44% of all Australian domestic violence (AIC, 2006). - An estimated 80% of cases of violence go unreported to police (Vic Health). - Domestic violence is the leading contributor to death, disability and illness in Victorian women aged 15-44, being responsible for more of the disease burden than many well-known factors including high blood pressure, smoking and obesity(AIC). - Between 50% and 60% of women mental health service users have experienced domestic violence (Dept of Health). - 26% of the 105,000 Australians who are homeless on any given night are women & Children fleeing violence at home (Homeless Aust). - In 2011 a national report put a figure on the economic cost of domestic violence to the Australian economy as over $13.6 billion a year. - Children and young people are scared by family violence, even when the violence is not directed at them and it can teach children that violence is ok. - Pet abuse and domestic violence are linked in many disturbing ways. 85% of the abused women who sought refuge with them reported pet abuse in the home
