How Can Child Development ? I believe the teachers attitude is hugely important in poorer schools the teachers (often sub consciously)have written off the kids and that has a major psychological detriment to the childrens belief in themselves. I believe teaching is the most important profession and we do not recognise or reward that sufficiently as they do in many Scandanavian countries where their attainment is higher.(I am a lawyer so am not saying this from self interest). A motivated,truly committed,passionate and talented teacher can light a fire in the belly of most kids that would take a lifetime to extinguish. Read Malcolm Gladwells book Outliers it is full of thoughtful wise insights about success. I believe in root cause problem solving and it doesnt take a genius to work out that education is the key to solving many of our problems in society.60% OF PRISONERS cant read and write,poor eating habits leading to epidemic obesity problems , the list is endless of the potential to use our schools to create more healthy happy fulfilled citizens which could reduce our CJS budget,our health bills never mind the emotional costs to us all. Parental influence has an impact of course but I beleive teachers can break the chain more effectively and we train and select teachers so we have control over that far more than parents.Of course we need excellent leaders as heads to facilitate this. We should model our schools on the best private ones with supervised homework till 6,lots of activities and interests for all kids to bring out their passions and talents (which wont all be academic) and strict discipline laced with kindness and empathy. We could transform our society but this would take courage,commitment, diligence and determination over many years,it is not a quick fix. Wouldnt it be wonderful if all parties could just agree on this one policy and commit to make this happen instead of sacrificing the future of so many on the altar of dogma,self interest etc..
