Did you ever watch the movie Hook? Do you remember the part when baby Peter Pans pram rolls away from his mother, topples, and he is shown crying on the ground in the rain? Nothing else in the movie phased Addie. Not the sword fighting, or yelling, or language, or unkindness, but that scene brought her to sobbing tears immediately. To her, that baby looks like Simon, and if his carriage could roll away and he could be lost, it might happen to our baby. Everything else she understood as a story, even the children being taken away in the night. But the idea that a baby could be lost from his mother just broke her. Sometimes I forget how deeply sensitive she can be. I forget how intensely empathetic she is. And I think she loves Simon as much as I do. Which I honestly didnt know was possible.
