Wong Kim Ark that a child born in the U.S. to Chinese immigrants was a U.S. citizen. --Today in 1930, the city of Constantinople, Turkey, was officially renamed Istanbul. Built as Byzantium about 657 B.C., it was renamed Constantinople in the 4th century A.D. after Constantine the Great made the city his capital. The name of the city of Angora was also changed to Ankara. --Today in 1990, President George H.W. Bush posthumously awarded Jesse Owens, African-American track and field Olympic champion, the Congressional Gold Medal. Owens won international fame by winning 4 gold medals in the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany, in addition to becoming the first American to win 4 Olympic gold medals in track and field. On the 1st day, Hitler shook hands only with the German victors and then left the stadium. Olympic Committee officials then insisted that Hitler greet each medalist or none at all. Hitler opted for the latter and skipped all further medal presentations (spoiled brat that he was). Sadly, after a New York ticker-tape parade in his honor, Owens had to ride the freight elevator to attend his own reception at the Waldorf-Astoria.
