Did you know... During James K. Polks presidency, the State of the Union Address was called The Annual Message of the President. It was a written document delivered to Congress in December rather than a speech delivered in January. President Polks first recommendation to Congress in his first annual message (December, 1845) was a request to finalize Texas statehood. The terms of annexation which were offered by the United States have been accepted by Texas, the public faith of both parties is solemnly pledged to the compact of their union. Nothing remains to consummate the event but the passage of an act by Congress to admit the State of Texas into the Union upon an equal footing with the original States.
