Did you know? From the establishment of the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal Empire until the British Raj, Urdu (synonymous with Hindustani) was the language of both Muslims and Hindus? The communal nature of the language lasted until Persian was banned by the British and Urdu was made a co-official along with English. This triggered a backlash from Hindus of the northwest, which wanted that Urdu should be written in the Devanagari script instead of the traditional Persian-Arabic script. The racist and communal nature of the Hindu leaders at that time thus formed Hindi, which consciously substitutes Sanskrit words for those of Persian origin in Urdu. This hindi was made the official language of Bihar in 1881, establishing a sectarian divide of Urdu for Muslims and hindi for Hindus.
