Did you know? In the United States, the police force – the ones who have sworn to protect and serve it’s citizens – frequently and “legally” rob people by enforcing a practice called “Civil Forfeiture.” Civil Forfeiture is a form of confiscation that allows the state and federal government to seize peoples assets and property without a conviction of crime. That means that the police can unjustly take away your things without a valid reason. Frequently, during traffic stops, police officers ask drivers if they have large sums of money on their person. And if they do, they usually give some artificial reason to seize that money. They can even seize your vehicle and even your house. Even more disappointingly, the police is allowed to keep most, if not all, of the money they seize. Overall, the police “have seized $2.5 billion” from people who were not charged with a crime. Unfortunately, most people can’t afford a lawyer so they have nearly no way of combating this form of “legalized robbery”. All this does is undermine the legal trust between the police force and their employer – the American people. Clearly, we need to take a hard look at Civil Forfeiture and reform it.
