Did you know? Many people ask whats the difference between the video inside TS and MP4 files. So heres a short explaination. MPEG-4 (also called H.264) is the video compression technology behind both MP4 and TS files. MPEG-4 is the compression technology used in high definition Blu-ray discs and also by all of the Hauppauge HD video recorders (HD PVR Rocket, HD PVR 2, the original HD PVR and the Colossus). MPEG-4 gives very good quality and very good compression rates, which means you get great quality in a small amount if storage on your computer. TS stands for Transport stream, and all Hauppauge HD game recorders use AVCHD (Advanced Video Coding, High Definition) when making TS files. MP4 is an abbreviated term for MPEG-4 AVC, which stands for Advanced Video Coding. So, the basic recording technology behind TS and MP4 files is the same, MPEG-4 Advanced Video Coding, and in fact the video bits inside both TS and MP4 files is the same. So whats the difference between TS and MP4? MP4 files are segmented into chunks, which was originally done so that MP4 files could be easily downloaded over the Internet. TS files, on the other hand, are flat which means they start at the beginning of a recording and then go to the end in one file. When an HD PVR makes a TS file, we format the file into a format called AVCHD, which is the format used in Blu-ray discs. These files are easy to edit since most video editors can handle AVCHD video. Otherwise, the video bits inside both TS and MP4 files are the same. Let us know if you have any questions on this, as wed be happy to help answer them!
