Did you know.........On this day July 15th, in 1870, Georgia is admitted back into the United States. Georgia was last the state to re-join, five years after the conclusion of the Civil War. Georgia was one of the original 13 colonies, and was at the front of the slavery debate for decades before the outbreak of the Civil War. Georgians disagreed whether secession was a legal right or a natural one, but many of them agreed that it would be a real possibility if an anti-slavery president was elected. When that happened, Georgia’s representatives voted to leave the Union. Georgia as of 2011 was the 9th most populated state, with almost 10 million people. Its economy is heavily dependent upon agriculture, and a number of fortune 500 companies, like like Coca-Cola, UPS, and Home Depot are based in Georgia. Its capital is Atlanta, Georgia’s largest city with about half a million people, and five million more in the metropolitan area.
