Did you know? The history of Memorial Day has deep roots in New York State. In 1866, Waterloo, NY established the annual tradition of lowering its flags to half-mast to honor soldiers killed in combat. A century later, on March 7, 1966, New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller signed a proclamation declaring Waterloo, NY as the birthplace of Memorial Day. Congress soon passed Concurrent Resolution 587 and on May 26, 1966 President Lyndon B. Johnson signed an official Presidential Proclamation recognizing Waterloo as the official birthplace of Memorial Day. Many communities claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day but only Waterloo, NY has a Presidential Proclamation and Congressional Resolution to back it up.
