Did you know? Tooth decay equals percussion equipment . . .The Schaumburg/Hoffman Estates, IL, Guardsmen were a real powerhouse in the 1970s and early 1980s, making DCI Finals in 1976, 1978, 1979 and 1980. It can be argued that their super 1977 corps, which wound up a disappointing sixteenth place, could also have been a finalist, as they held seasonal head-to-head advantages over six corps that did make the finals. When the corps was just starting up in June 1961, they were trying to raise money to purchase percussion equipment. They chose to sell cans of candy at $1.00 per can and ordered 1,008 cans, as it had been decided that the quantity would raise the amount necessary to buy the drums. Things looked discouraging at best when the Guardsmen set up a booth at the Chicago Lions Club Village Fair after the corps sold only eight cans the first day. Corps management second-guessed themselves and things looked like a genuine disaster. The second day was a different story, as they miraculously sold 650 cans. By the end of the next week, all the candy was gone and the corps got their percussion equipment. The rest is history. (By Brian Tolzmann, DCW staff)
