Did you know that Sheila Alwell from Dancing 4 a Change Society and I have been collaborating together on a BRAND new after school program for kids called Dance It Up!? Well if you dont know now you know! Check out the overview below and reach out of you have any questions! As I am sure you already know, there are tons of dance teachers and dance programs, as well as lots of great things going on in the world in terms of dance. Unfortunately though, the dance world in North America is almost completely performance based, to the exclusion of many other purposes for movement and dance, and not all dance facilitators, or dance programs, are created equally. When dance facilitators and programs are focused solely on the technical/performance aspects of dance above all else, which many of them are, they often miss the mark in terms of the full student-centred engagement and development of students’ social-emotional character in addition to just building physical skills. In our experience, many students are often not fully engaged in traditional dance programs and may either follow along in order to be compliant without fully engaging holistically, or defy the program entirely in order to avoid experiencing discomfort. Even students who are engaged may leave the program learning new physical skills but not having had benefited in any other way in terms of their holistic development. Theresa “Tree” Robyn Walsh is a Dance Facilitator who not only specializes in helping people feel good dancing, but who also uses dance as a tool to help students to develop their character and actively become more of the people they want to be. Her entire mission in life is to inspire people to see what is possible when they are unable to see new possibilities for themselves, and she does this through dance facilitation regardless of the context, style, program or demographic. While she is by no means a super human dance magician who can perfectly engage every student at all times, she works tirelessly to draw people in with a variety of methods and modalities, including, but not limited to, a killer sense of humour and super rad music to hook in even the most reluctant student. She often achieves her objective in a way that surprises the regular teachers of these students as she is often able to get even the most difficult students movin’ and groovin’ with a smile! She focuses on helping kids to work together as a team in order to achieve a collective goal, whether that be to perform in a show, choreograph dances together or simply get into the groove or all of the above. She customizes programs to meet the communities needs so regardless of your student needs, she will be able to tailor her program to meet them. Before implementing anything program wise there will be a consultation with a faculty member in order to complete a needs assessment of the student population so she can get an idea of how to tailor the program before the first visit, and modifications made along the way to make sure its staying in rapport with the needs of the community. Check out her Why Tree does what she does video below to learn more about her mission and reach out to her for more information if you would like it! tree@mytreehousevision 604 355 1733 myTREEHOUSEvision myTREEHOUSEvision vimeo/84564825
