Did you know that according to US and Canadian treaty and law Native Americans in both Canada and the US do not need a passport to cross the border? When the borders between the US and Canada were set many Native communities and cultures were divided by the border. Despite the law Native people are often harassed and unlawfully detained for hours at the border between Maine and Canada because of border agents unfamiliarity with the law. This issue is well known to the Native communities in Maine but has so far received very little coverage in the press. Since Monday we have been posting about Native American issues in Maine, especially the critical work the Maine Wabanaki-State Child Welfare Truth and Reconciliation Commission is engaged in and will continue posting on this and other important topics through C̶o̶l̶u̶m̶b̶u̶s̶ ̶D̶a̶y̶ Indigenous Peoples Day.
