Did you know that in Ireland if you order corned beef on St. Patricks Day you might get a funny look? In Ireland they eat bacon instead of corned beef and have been doing so for centuries. It wasnt until the Irish started coming to America that they started eating corned beef as an alternative to bacon...but how did it happen? Many Irish immigrants settled in areas near Jewish communities, especially in New York. Of course, these Jewish immigrants werent serving bacon in their delis, but they did have another type of cured meat...corned beef! In addition to being easier to find than bacon, the new Irish-Americans were also thrilled to discover that corned beef was far better value than more expensive pork in the New York area in the 19th century. Now you know!!
