Did you know that in addition to a wine cellar, a baking oven, and a burglar and fireproof gold vault that there is a bowling alley in the basement of the Mansion? Shared by all of the Mathews family, there are two lanes. Still visible today, there are circles on each lane that designated where and how the pins were to be set up. The Mathews domestic servants would reset the pins in addition to rolling the bowling back to the players via the main center gutter between the lanes. It was a popular family pastime; so much so that Florence Mathews, the last occupant of the Mansion, recalled in her diary that while the family was “playing bowls” while a robbery took place.
